INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Stamps of China.  We offer for sale stamps from one of the most fruitful and varied stamp-issuing authorities, China from 1878 to 1949.  From Empire to Republic to Civil War and World War, the turbulence of these years produced 1006 standard postage stamps (in the same years the U.S. produced about 800) and thousands of consistent, collectible varieties. Add to that the back-of-the-book issues, and those produced for individual Provinces and under Japanese Occupation, and you have enough for years of collecting pleasure.  Almost all of these stamps, it is worth noting, are affordable.

Every individual stamp we offer has been scanned in color, regardless of price.  [Please see our note on computer color reproduction below.] We also maintain a “recently added” section, so you can always see what’s new.   Detailed instructions for placing orders are given on the Ordering page

We currently accept payment in U.S. dollars via check, money order, or demand draft.  We also accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.  Please see the Ordering page for more details.

We have been in the business for many years, selling through the mail circuits as well as in a retail store.  We are new to the Internet so please use the send mail option and let us know what you think of our site.  We are committed to extending the same level of service to our new online customers as we always have to our long-standing clients.  Again, welcome and enjoy.

We've made some changes

Our website is now database driven -- which allows for faster and easier searching for available stamps.  The site now makes use of Active Server Pages (.asp). This change will be transparent to most users but it is possible that visitors using older versions of some browsers will not see pages displayed correctly.   We currently recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer v. 4.0 or higher.  Active server pages make use of cookies to keep track of each individual session but these are harmless and temporary.  No cookies are left on your system.  For you to view our site properly it is necessary that your browser be set to allow "session cookies".   Help on adjusting your browser's cookie settings is available here.

Active Server Pages technology still has some technical limitations and, on occasion, will result in error messages.  If this happens you should shutdown your browser and restart it.  If errors persist please email us and let us know.

Note on computer color reproduction

All of our stamps have been scanned in full color and are reproduced at 150% actual size for easy viewing.  It is important to remember that no two computers display an image in exactly the same manner.  Color calibration varies with individual monitors and different platforms (windows, macintosh, unix, etc) use different palettes.  If possible, you should have your display set to the highest possible color depth.  Any setting less than 65.5 thousand colors (16 bit) may cause the stamp images to appear degraded or, at the very least, noticably different from their true appearance.  If you have any furthur questions on this topic use the send mail option.

Note for Mac and AOL users

It has come to our attention that AOL’s web browser has trouble displaying some of our stamp images -- they sometimes appear blurry or with distorted areas.  Click on the "Prefs" button at the top center of the web browser and click on "Uncompressed graphics". This will eliminate the additional image compression that AOL adds to web graphics. If this fails to remove the distortion then we suggest that you switch to one of the higher quality web browsers that AOL now offers. In our experience, Internet Explorer 4.0 displays our site with the utmost quality.

Mac users may also see some discrepancies in our pages. Some of our blocks of text may appear with gaps between them, and the catalog numbers and prices may appear slightly out of sync. This stems from the differences in the Mac’s use of fonts.
